Fascinating profile of Nicolas Sarkozy, that most loathed of French presidents, from a British journalist’s perspective. I’ve long had a (mild) fondness for his policies, and this confirmed that to some extent. Definitely a good read for Francophiles with an interest in le Président de la République.

I tend to be more of a Truffautian than a Godardite, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for JLG and Anna Karina.

This is an entertaining read for a Francophone (and moderate Francophile). Even better is noting that the author failed to mention that quatre-vingts and quatre-vingts-dix is idiomatic to French French, rather than being standard in all varieties of French. In Belgium and Switzerland, octante and nonante are used for eighty and ninety (as well as septante for seventy), respectively. Damn, it feels good to be a pedant.
This made me laugh:

On Friday, the British newspaper The Independent, reported that the movie’s English-language subtitles would be in what was characterized as “Navajo English,” to replicate the fractured words spoken by Hollywood-style Indians in westerns (and in “F Troop”): “If a character is saying ‘give me your watch,’ the subtitle will read ‘You, me, watch.’
Interesting phenomenon, as noted by Dave Weigel.
